Guess Who Was On The Local News!
Gilbert Morales, the manager of the El Cajon store, was interviewed recently about gas saving myths and realities recently by the local Fox News affiliate. Mr. Morales talked about the unsafe practices of tire over-inflation, and taking your car out of gear. He also spoke of better and practical alternatives for increasing gas mileage, like cold air intakes, less restrictive exhaust systems, and custom programmers.
El Cajon is in San Diego county. Southern California has the highest gasoline prices in the country. In some areas, it is already over $5 a gallon!
Super Shops® isn't just a speed shop, it's also about "performance" and performance and fuel economy can be friends.
Here are some tips on keeping gas prices down without having to sacrifice performance. Some may sound funny, but all are proven methods:
- Use a clean air cleaner, and check it regularly.
- Convert to a cold air intake system.
- Change your oil on schedule and keep the level at the manufacturer's recommended levels. Not observing this can cost your more money in engine repair costs than you will ever save in gas!
- Getting a less restrictive exhaust system can not only improve gas mileage, but also improve performance by a noticeable amount.
- Regularly wash (and this is important) WAX your car. A clean and waxed car is a streamlined car that cuts through the air more efficiently. There's a reason why aircraft are washed and waxed too, and that's aerodynamics.
- Keep tires inflated to the manufacturer's specified PSI, and replace worn tires. Under-inflated tires cause too much friction, wasting gas. Over-inflated tires are a safety hazard, especially at high speeds. Tires get hotter the faster you go and with heat you have expansion, and and over-inflated tire can blow-out at high speeds. Over-inflated tires also have less needed grip on the road.
- Get a customized programmer. Sure, these programmers are advertised to increase performance, perhaps at a loss of MPG. However, they also can be used to increase gas mileage by a great amount. Many of them have switchable modes of "High Mileage", "Balanced", "Performance" and "Stock". While this helps gasoline engines, many have found an extremely drastic change with diesel engines in both the performance and high-mileage modes.
- Keep windows rolled up. If it's too hot, turn on the fan. If it's really hot, turn on the A/C. The drag of the open windows wastes more fuel than the drag of the A/C on the engine.
- Tune the engine regularly according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule. A well tuned engine is a clean burning one. It's good for the environment and your wallet.
- Use cruise control where safe. Humans typically pump the gas pedal, lowering the efficiency of the engine (never use cruise on regular streets, just the highway).

- Accelerate smoothly and safely. Not everything is a race. You'd be surprised how much gas you save by doing this!
